Why is my dog constantly coughing?
Original Question: My dog is constantly coughing especially at nights and it sounds like he is gargling but there’s no fluid, it’s like something is stuck in his throat. He is a Chihuahua and getting a diagnosis is very expensive, what could be wrong with him? It is hurting me more to hear him coughing, what can I do? - Pat

I am sorry to hear your dog is having difficulties with coughing. This can be very distressing for a pet caregiver to experience. There are many possible underlying causes of a cough – common causes include infectious diseases such as “kennel cough,” collapsing trachea, chronic bronchitis, and heart disease. Unfortunately, the treatment for each is quite different, and so determining the cause is crucial. I would encourage you to visit your veterinarian for a consult and physical examination. This will help to narrow down the list of possible causes and determine the best way to treat the cough.
