Why does my dog keep getting crystals in her urine and what would be the course of treatment?
Original Question: My 2-year-old female Pug "Sissy" has had blood in her urine 3 times in the last 3 months. She has been to the vet each time because of crystals. My Pug eats very well with the odd "people" treat and loves bananas, carrots, pumpkin (in moderation as I put Glucosamine in it requested by the vet) small amounts of yogurt and some peanut butter to hide her pills. We have changed her food to the "Royal Canine" brand for UTIs. My question is, what am I doing wrong for her to continue having crystals in her urine? - Tia
Hi Tia,
Thanks for sending in your question.
It sounds like you have done a lot of good things for your little pug already. Urinary problems can be frustrating to deal with as a pet owner. Veterinary urinary diets are generally very effective in addressing crystal formation in the urine. However, if there are complicating factors that have not been resolved, you may continue to see problems. I would strongly suggest following up with your vet and consider additional diagnostic tests if your dog is still having urinary problems. They will be able to help guide you further on why things are not resolving. As a side note — it is generally best to eliminate or limit other foods or treats when on any veterinary diet, as this could interfere with its efficacy.
Best of luck!
