Would Goldic medication improve my dog’s Wobbler syndrome and are there any other treatment options?
Original Question: Hi Doctor I have a unique situation and hoping you can help. I have an 8 1/2 Doberman that has been diagnosed with Wobbler syndrome. We have seen 2 neurologists after an MRI at the London hospital and surgery or steroid treatment is not a viable option. We did find a new product that is approved to use on humans and horses in Europe which is now offered in the U.S called "Goldic". This was used on another Doberman in the U.S - you can find the video on youtube by searching on "cure for wobblers". We contacted the owner of Titan and we purchased the kit, which consists of 4 PRP injections epidural to the cervical over 2 weeks. We need to give this a last try before my dog’s condition gets worse. We have no hope but to try this. I have seen 2 vets and 2 neurologists who will not administer the treatment. I can understand the position you’re in. This is a difficult disease with very few options.
I have done a search of the literature regarding this treatment and contacted a neurologist to discuss it as well. It is the consensus of most North American neurologists that there is no evidence that this treatment works unfortunately.
The bottom line is that a specialist is unlikely to use the treatment unless it has been confirmed successful in an appropriately established study. Often there are individual cases that see a positive response and you can’t apply that success to every case. I’m certain you know this and understand it well but you are just looking for someone to attempt the treatment.
In general, I cannot recommend a treatment that hasn’t been well studied. You can always continue to search for someone who is comfortable with delivering the treatment. In the meantime, you can consider other treatment options. There is a surgical option which has a less than desirable prognosis. Recently, there has been a lot of discussion about the use of acupuncture, chiropractic treatment and supportive devices, such as a brace. While you search for someone to administer this treatment I would recommend that you consider these other treatment modalities in the meantime.
