Dogs usually pant to cool themselves off. However, panting can have other causes: excitement, stress, overexertion, or pain. Medical issues that cause excessive panting include cardiac problems, allergic reactions, heatstroke, and poisoning. Dogs with asthma may pant heavily and with a wide-open mouth.
