Can I give my dog loratadine with allergy medication?
Original Question: I have a 10-year-old Shih Tzu with allergies and she is currently taking Atopica 25mg once/day along with Loratadine 5mg. Can you tell me how antihistamines she should be taking? I would appreciate any help. Thank you! - Fran
Hi Fran,
You’re already giving her an antihistamine, the loratadine, so if it’s working well with the Atopica, then you’re in good shape. If you wanted to try other antihistamines in consultation with your veterinarian, I encourage you to check out our resource about the dosage and how to use the different antihistamines for dogs that are available and watch our video about antihistamine usage in pets for more information on this topic.
I would also recommend that you supplement the diet with omega-3 fatty acids and you could consider an anti-itch dog shampoo which you can ask your veterinarian about.
Allergies are annoying and difficult to work with. The Atopica for dogs is a great medication, albeit expensive, but it tends to work well and with limited side effect or long term side effect.
Sounds like you’re on the right track.
Good luck.
