What are some tips on how to calm a dog in the car?

A dog sticking its head out of a red car window

Hi there,

Understandably, a car trip can be a nervous time for pets but I do have some tips on how to calm a dog in the car. It can be beneficial to talk to your vet if this is a newly developed problem just in case there is something else going on. If your dog has always been nervous of car rides, a slow acclimatization at this point won’t be possible. Just getting in the car without going somewhere and then doing short trips may help to ease his anxiety before going on a longer trip. You could try the dimenhydrinate or he may need a different type of medication. You should discuss dosages with your veterinarian and make sure your dog is okay to take anything over-the-counter. Because we do not have a vet-client-patient relationship (I haven’t examined your dog), I am sorry that I cannot advise you of a specific dose. I encourage you to check out our video that offers some really helpful tips on how to reduce a pet’s stress when travelling.

I wish you luck in your travels.
