How far and how often can you walk a dog with a heart murmur?
Original Question: I have a little Terrier/Poodle mix weighing about 18-22 lbs and Maggie will be 18 years old in November. She has a heart murmur but is fine and my question is, how far is enough to walk her and how often? Right now she walks about 600 yards around the block 6 or 7 times a day, slow but steady. - Sandra
Hi Sandra,
Congrats to Maggie and you for having such a great, long relationship! It is best to let Maggie dictate how much exercise is too much. If she is tolerating the current amount and does not seem to be in pain or having any coughing or breathing problems, then you can continue the current regimen. If she is getting tired after only part of this walk or seems to have problems moving, I would shorten the walk and get a check-up with your veterinarian. There may be some things they can do to help her get around better. And lastly, don’t go out when it’s too hot and it might help to carry some water.
All the best.
