Hi Elaine,
Hereditary Nasal Parakeratosis (HNPK) fortunately does not cause any long-term health but it doesn’t look very nice. A dog may get secondary infections if the fissures are really deep or raw. It would help to know what kind of ointment you are currently using but some of the others that may help (after consulting with your veterinarian of course) might be vitamin E or Bag Balm. Your veterinarian may have other options and is the best person to dispense proper medical advice. As far as the licking it off part, firstly make sure you are only applying a thin layer and rubbing it in thoroughly. Secondly, I recommend doing this before something she truly loves like meal time, going for a walk, or playing with her favorite toy. This will help distract her while the ointment has some time to work and dry.
I hope this helps!
