Hi Amy,
I am so sorry to hear about your dog’s injury. This is a common injury in active, high-energy dogs. Thankfully, these types of injuries will typically heal without any long-term consequences. I would however, suggest you have him checked out at your vet to ensure there are no complicating factors (fractured toes, infection, etc.). Because this area of the body is constantly exposed to contaminants (being on the ground), the risk of infection is high – especially if he is also constantly licking the area! Prescription oral antibiotics may be required if there is infection present, as well as pain medication. Sometimes, these injuries need to be bandaged, and this requires regular changing (usually every few days) to avoid complications. It is an injury best handled by your vet and their experienced staff. If treated promptly and appropriately, the paw surface should start to heal within a week. It may take longer for all the skin to grow back and cover the area.
I hope this is helpful for you!
