Physical discipline is NEVER warranted. The methods you describe may actually be making the problem worse or creating other behavioral issues. First, get him checked out medically to make sure there are no health problems (urinary tract infection, bladder stones, prostate problems). Next, consider retraining him in the house through crate training. Additionally, with behavioral problems, there are either pheromones or potential medications that might help in conjunction with behavioral modification to stop him from peeing inside.
