Q: Will spaying reduce my dog’s anxiety?

Original Question: "Hello, I just adopted 6-year-old Lab mix. All vaccination are up to date except she is not spayed. So will spaying at this age is going to calm her down? She seems to have a bit of anxiety otherwise she is a very good dog and we want to keep her. Also what is the anti-anxiety supplement that Dr. Greenway talks about on his show? Thank you very much." - Barbara

Hi Barbara,

I’m happy to hear you have adopted an adult dog, she is lucky to have you. As long as she does not have any underlying health issues, then she can certainly be spayed at this age. You may find she is a bit more relaxed after being spayed, but it may not have a major impact on her anxiety problem. I am not sure which supplement you are referring to, but there are a variety available that could help. I generally like to start with supplements to see if those work before trying prescription medications. Your vet can help you select the most appropriate supplement for your dog, as there are many factors to consider, and he or she will know your pet best. You may also want to consider pheromone products, a diet change and consulting a behaviourist and/or dog trainer on her specific anxiety problems. Supplements and medications are always going to be more effective when used in conjunction with behavioural modification and training.

I hope this gives you a bit of direction, and best of luck with your new dog!
