I’m Dr. Clayton Greenway with healthcareforpets.com and this is Saul. He’s a husky mix puppy and what we’re going to talk about is how to prevent biting in your puppy which is a really annoying and difficult behavior but there’s a simple fix for it.

You’ve got to remember that puppies are used to having littermates so when they bite a littermate that littermate will yelp and by yelping they know that they’ve hurt that other dog and it will turn them off biting. So what I’m going to do is I’m going to try to get Saul to bite my finger and then I’m going to let out a yelp. It’s important to know that I’ll be making that noise and not the puppy and I want you to watch his reaction when I do that so here we go [Sound: Loud high pitch bark].

Now what happens when I put my fingers in front of him, is he’ll tend to push his nose away whereas before he was putting his lips around my fingers. You should see this with your own dog. I’d recommend that you do this once a day, I wouldn’t do it too much and I certainly wouldn’t make that yelp noise too often throughout the day or it will lose its value.

You may want to practice it first but practice it without the puppy around so that you get a good high pitched yelp that’s going to have that effect on your puppy when it bites your finger. You can find out about more puppy information here at healthcareforpets.com.
